Lights Behind Me Fade

By Ilya Chervony · American Chanson

Read lyrics
It’s strange how a truck stop at 2 a.m. can feel like a church for men who ran out of places to pray. Coffee’s burnt, music’s bad, but the silence… the silence knows your name. I sat in that booth by the window, hands wrapped around a cup that warmed nothing but habit. Outside, the neon flickered — blue, then dead, then blue again — like a pulse barely hangin’ on. And for a moment, I thought, “Yeah… I know that feeling.” Lights behind me fade, the road ahead don’t shine. I keep drivin’ miles that were never really mine. If the night had a voice, I think it’d sound like me — Just tired, just lonely, just tryin’ to be free. A waitress asked where I was headed. I told her, “East.” Didn’t say how far, or why, or what I was leavin’ behind. She nodded like she understood — maybe she did. Folks who work nights always see the ghosts first. Lights behind me fade, the road ahead don’t shine. I keep drivin’ miles that were never really mine. If the night had a voice, I think it’d sound like me — Just tired, just lonely, just tryin’ to be free. Sometimes I wonder if the world notices when a man disappears slowly, mile by mile. Not in a big way — no crash, no fire — just… slips out of his own life like a shadow steppin’ off the curb. Lights behind me fade, but I drive on anyway. Maybe somewhere in the dark there’s a dawn that wants to stay. And if the night has room for a broken soul like me — I’ll keep rollin’, keep whisperin’, keep hopin’ to be free. You finish your coffee, pay the check, and hit the road. No one stops you. No one asks. And somehow… that’s the loneliest part.
