Team Line

They say the road makes brothers out of strangers… And liars out of honest men. But me and my partner… we got no secrets. Only miles… and the kind of trust you can’t buy. It’s 2 AM on I-40. Fog’s sittin’ low, headlamps cuttin’ tunnels through the night. My partner’s in the bunk, boots still on — ’Cause we don’t stop longer than it takes to swap keys. We haul steel, paper, sometimes things you don’t ask about. We’re paid to keep it movin’. Paid to stay quiet. We’re rollin’… two hearts, one rig, one line Through the black night, past the state signs No questions, no goodbyes Just the hum of the tires and the truth in our eyes Sometimes he tells me about his kids. I tell him about a woman I used to love. But mostly… we talk about the road. About the places where you can get a hot meal at 4 AM… About the weigh stations you can slip past if you know the trick. And sometimes, we just ride in silence, Watchin’ the white lines pass, Countin’ the miles we’ll never get back. We’re rollin’… two hearts, one rig, one line Through the black night, past the state signs No questions, no goodbyes Just the hum of the tires and the truth in our eyes One night, middle of winter, The brakes froze up near Flagstaff. Snow comin’ down sideways. He crawled under that trailer in the cold and fixed it, While I kept the engine runnin’ and prayed. We didn’t say a word about it later… But I knew then — This man would die before he left me on the side of the road. They say the road makes brothers out of strangers… And maybe that’s true. But for me and my partner, The road made us… Family.
