Winter

By Ilya Chervony · American Chanson

Read lyrics
Winter came early this year, crept in quiet on my back road. I was driving with the heater broken, singing just to stay warm. White fields on both sides of me, old barns leaning like tired friends— funny how a lonely highway makes you honest again. And the wind kept whispering, “Boy, you’re tougher than you know…” So I tightened up my jacket and I followed where it told. Winter— you don’t scare me like before. I’ve walked through cold nights with no one at my door. If the world’s gonna freeze, let it freeze a little more— Winter, take me with you, I know what I’m driving for. Stopped at a diner near mile nine, fogged-up windows, beating light. Grabbed a coffee, heard two old men talk about the changing times. And I smiled, ’cause I felt it— something shifting in my chest. Maybe winter ain’t a burden, maybe it’s a kind of rest. And the sky kept hinting there’s a new day down the road— so I threw the car in gear, and I let the future unfold. Winter— you don’t scare me like before. I’ve walked through colder nights with no one at my door. If the world’s gonna freeze, let it freeze a little more— Winter, take me with you, I know what I’m driving for. There’s a truth in the frost, you only learn when you're alone— every storm that shakes you sharpens the path back home. Winter— you don’t scare me like before. Let the snow fall heavy, I’m not trembling anymore. If the world’s gonna freeze, let it freeze a little more— Winter, keep me steady, I finally know what I’m driving for.
